DMLU - SCREENING UNITS
Within Integrated Management, the selective collection of reusable or recyclable solid waste (dry garbage) stands out. These wastes separated by the population generate employment and income for workers formally organized in associations and/or cooperatives, in addition to helping to preserve the environment.
Trucks collect recyclable waste in 100% of the streets that admit trucks and send them to sorting units (UT). In these places, workers separate (plastics, paper, long-life packaging, glass, styrofoam, plastic bottles), press, group in bales and autonomously negotiate the sale of these materials to the recycling and/or reuse industry.
The City Hall of Porto Alegre provides all the infrastructure for the UTs with which it has agreements and guarantees maintenance costs of approximately R$ 5,200.00 per month. The result of the sale of waste is divided among the members of the associations or cooperatives that manage each UT.
In 2000, when it completed 10 years, this service received the Selective Collection Award - Government Category, from the entity Compromisso Empresarial para a Reciclagem (CEMPRE), in recognition of the best management practice in the recycling of solid waste in Brazil.
